Houdini Shiraz shows the easier, more immediate side of Smidge.
The 2021 vintage is a 100% McLaren Vale Shiraz drawn from premium blocks across the region, from Seaview in the north to Willunga in the south. It was grown in a warm, dry season, with careful irrigation and canopy management helping the fruit ripen evenly and come in clean. Vine age ranges from 14 to 45 years.
This is a supple, generous red built for drinking rather than waiting. It carries dark berries, a little spice, fine tannin and balance, giving you the warmth and shape of McLaren Vale Shiraz in a softer, more approachable frame. The Houdini range on the site is positioned as the fresher, easier-drinking side of Smidge, and this wine fits that brief well.
In the glass
Dark berries, a little spice, soft tannin and a balanced, easy line through the palate.
Why we like it
Houdini Shiraz is open, generous and ready to enjoy. It has enough fruit and shape to feel properly made, but it stays relaxed and easy to return to.
Drink it with
Pizza, grilled sausages, burgers, simple pasta, weeknight barbecue, or any table that wants a softer, easy-drinking red.
When to open it
Drink now and enjoy it for its fruit, warmth and ease.
Why it matters
If the flagship wines show the more structured, cellar-worthy side of Smidge, Houdini shows the more immediate side: wines shaped for earlier drinking, softer edges and easier enjoyment. The site’s own pack copy describes this Shiraz as “supple McLaren Vale fruit” with dark berries, spice, fine tannin and balance, which is exactly how it should be read.
