Akeringa McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Akeringa is the first flagship Cabernet Sauvignon released from Smidge’s home block in Willunga.
Named in honour of the former Akeringa estate, this wine marks an important step in the range: a more serious, cellar-worthy Cabernet built from estate fruit and handled with real intent.
The 2018 vintage continues the trial of 100% new oak first explored with La Grenouille, but takes it further. It was matured for two years in 100% new extra-tight-grained Cadus hogsheads and fermented in open-top vessels on skins left dry, helping build the wine’s fine-grained tannin, shape and energy.
This is a Cabernet with depth and authority, but also with control. It carries dark fruit, savoury detail and oak polish without losing line or freshness.
In the glass
Cassis, black cherry, kirsch, vanilla, bouquet garni and pencil lead, with savoury, saline energy and fine, nourishing tannins.
Why we like it
Akeringa brings together estate fruit, Cabernet structure and a more elevated oak regime in a way that feels complete rather than forced. It is textural, detailed and built to age.
Drink it with
Roast beef, lamb, mushrooms, hard cheeses, or a more substantial meal that suits a serious Cabernet.
When to open it
Drink now with air, or cellar confidently over the years ahead.

“Willunga fruit from the former Akeringa estate. An extension of the ’17 trial of 100% new oak that commenced with the La Grenouille cuvée. Matured for 2 years in 100% new extra-tight-grained Cadus hogsheads. Fermented in open-top vessels on skins left dry. The skins serve as a conduit for pithy, nourishing, fine-grained tannins. Cassis, vanilla, bouquet garni, black cherry, kirsch and pencil lead. Savoury, saline and energetic. A beautifully made wine that is textural, impeccably detailed and undeniably salubrious. Plenty in the tank.”
