Magic Dirt Greenock is one of the pinnacle wines in the Smidge range, shaped by the sub-regional terroir of Greenock in the Barossa Valley.
The 2016 vintage is rich, mouthfilling and expansive, with dark fruit at its centre and ripe tannins carrying the wine through every part of the palate.
This is a Shiraz of depth and generosity, but it is not simply broad. It has enough structure and detail to keep the wine composed, long and serious.
In the glass
Dark fruit, savoury depth and spice, with ripe tannin, layered texture and a wine that explores every corner of the mouth.
Why we like it
Greenock gives Magic Dirt a more opulent, deeply flavoured expression. It is a flagship red with real presence, but still with discipline.
Drink it with
Roast beef, game, slow-cooked lamb, mushroom dishes, hard cheeses, or a cooler evening that suits a richer, more enveloping Shiraz.
When to open it
Drink now with a little air, or cellar confidently over the years ahead.
Recent praise
97 points — James Halliday Wine Companion
“From Smidge's estate vineyard, the soil deep red clay/loam with small fragments of quartz and ironstone… a wine that explores every corner of the mouth, ripe, slightly fluffy tannins the standard bearers.”
